Commonly Asked Questions:
How often should my dogs nails be trimmed?
Answer: Every 4-6 Weeks
Depending on the time of year and your dogs activity level, I generally recommend every 4-6 weeks. For example, in the warmer months, dogs tend to be more active and naturally grind their nails down outside. If a dog is long overdue and have grown long quicks, then I might recommend more frequent trims to help the quick recede to a normal length.
Should I shave my double coated dog to help keep them cool?
Answer: NO
Double coated dogs need their undercoat to help regulate their body temperature. It keeps them cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Shaving them actually has the opposite affect and allows them to over heat much more quickly. I always recommend a de-shed treatment instead, it is much more beneficial for your dog and for your vacuum cleaner!
When should I start bringing my new puppy to the groomers?
Answer: As soon as they have had all 3 puppy shots, usually 12-16weeks old.
My policy is to start them on the table as soon as they are fully vaccinated! I recommend that puppies are strictly in every 3-4weeks for puppy intros. Each visit I will introduce them to a little bit more in attempt to not overwhelm them and make grooming a positive experience. We want to set them up for success! They are having to learn a whole new skill just like potty training and walking on a leash.
How do I know my groomer is a good fit for me and my dog?
Answer: Ask lots of questions!!!
Dogs and people all have at least one thing in common… we are all different! When trying to find a groomer, let them know what your dog is like. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses; some groomers may specialize in grooming dogs who exhibit aggressive behavior for grooming and some may only groom small dogs, etc. Always feel free to ask them questions about certain protocols they may have or what they believe their strengths are. It is important to be compatible with your groomer and to build a relationship… after all you are leaving very important & loved cargo with them!
